The tax is estimated to bring $240 million dollars into Hall County for the next six years… through the continuation of an additional 1 cent sales tax within the county limits.
That’s the problem. It’s a continuation of the same voluntary tax that we’ve been voting in for two decades.
Seriously. Hall County has had a SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) for over two decades. Politicians keep proposing it, and the voters keep approving it… over and over and over again.
At this point, the tax isn’t used to fund special projects, it’s used to “cover up” the misplaced priorities of our county government. Need a new landfill? Sure do! But instead of funding it properly, they’ll put it into a SPLOST so that the voters have to decide whether to fund the landfill or not.
This isn’t some frilly park. It’s a landfill. A NEEDED PART OF ANY SUBURBAN AREA. These crucial things shouldn’t be included in a SPLOST.
Again, a SPLOST is not for critical things. A landfill (or traffic lights) or any other crucial project should never be put into a SPLOST, because if it fails, the government will have to raise taxes to pay for it anyway.
Yet, Hall County voters keep approving it… for over two decades.
